Federal regulations specify that individuals serving temporarily in positions requiring Senate approval cannot exceed 210 days. This period began when Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for his opposition to vaccination, dismissed Susan Monarez from her Senate-approved post as CDC director in late summer—reportedly because she declined to automatically endorse modifications to CDC immunization guidelines. Until recently, Jay Bhattacharya, the National Institutes of Health leader, had temporarily assumed the additional responsibilities of CDC director. However, his official tenure in that capacity has now expired.
