Sluggish by nature, the Greenland shark matches its ancient stature. At peak effort, it travels a mere 1.7 to 2.2 mph. Despite being among the ocean's top predators, its metabolism is remarkably low; a 200-kilogram shark sustains itself on calories equal to about one and a half chocolate biscuits daily. It hunts and scavenges, possibly ambushing sleeping seals but primarily feeding on ice-fallen prey like reindeer or polar bears. Human remains, such as a lone leg found in one stomach, attest to its varied diet. Even death comes slowly; as noted by surgeon Henry Dewhurst in 1834, a captured shark thrashes violently, and severed muscles twitch for days post-mortem, making handling hazardous.
